And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace—Colossians 3:15 (NLT)
For Insight
“You’re not the boss of me!” Whenever I heard our children say this from another room, I knew they were talking to one of their siblings who was trying to establish leadership or authority as they played together. Their resistance was firmly fixed, and they weren’t giving up any of their autonomy to their sibling.
It is one thing in child’s play to resist or reject leadership and authority from a playmate but an entirely different matter when we reject the lordship or rule of Christ’s peace in our heart and life.
As Paul wrote the church in Colossae, he instructed them to “let the peace that comes from Christ rule in their heart.” Receiving the peace of Christ and allowing his peace to rule in our hearts is to receive all of Christ. Jesus comes, not only to be our peace he wants to establish Lordship.
We cannot truly be united with Christ and belong to the body of Christ—which is bigger and wider than any one Christian denomination or congregation but a spiritual congregation stretching across the earth—and reject Christ’s peace. The peace of Christ is the sense of unity in him; all believers are to participate in and share his peace.
When we receive the peace of Christ in our heart and allow his peace to rule our heart we also say yes to his Lordship. This is the highest form of worship and act of faith we can have.
Jesus, we receive your peace and invite you to become lord of our heart and our life. Amen
