Lady Wisdom Builds a Lovely Home
Key Verse to Read and Treasure
Lady Wisdom builds a lovely home; Sir Fool comes along and tears it down brick by brick—Proverbs 14:1, The MSG
For Insight
During Solomon’s time, the running of a household was primarily done by women. Running a household—regardless of the size of the structure or number of people living there—was and is a great responsibility that included not only domestic chores but handling the finances, instructing children, and setting the tone in the home. Home should not be a place of discord or disarray but a peaceful and well-ordered environment.
Solomon’s nugget of wisdom provides a contrast between two types of individuals: one is wise, and one is foolish. And just like other areas where Solomon compares and contrasts personalities and behavior, we can apply God’s wisdom to all areas of life and behavior.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?…“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?…“For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and will be their God, and they will be my people.” (1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19; 2 Cor. 6:16).
Spiritually speaking the “Lady” of our house is the Wisdom of God. She puts everything in order for us. She sets the tone for the way we live our life. She opens the doors of our mind and our heart so that God can have full access and control. She shapes our attitude. She is a seeker of peace and loves to order everything so there is no inner conflict or duplicity. She continually leads us (back) to the Word of God for gaining more wisdom and understanding. She is a friend to reasonableness and patience. She is a close relative of faith, courage, strength, and hopefulness. She is wise, discerning, and careful in all she does so our house does not lack any needful thing. She is a promoter of prayer and praise, knowing they bring the soul joy and happiness. She is a stickler for having control over emotions and is constantly weighing and keeping them in check. She is a close relative to the Spirit of God and therefore is always making sure He has full access.
If Wisdom is the Lady of our house, then our unsubmitted carnal nature would be Sir Fool who is rebellious, hard-hearted and tears down every good thing Lady Wisdom does. Sir Fool destroys everything he gets his hands on. He does not seek to be in concert with and constantly battles against Lady Wisdom for control. Sir Fool loves division, fits of anger, hostility, petty argument, chaos, and confusion. He cannot be left on his own because he will destroy everything Lady Wisdom builds up. He is a chameleon and must be watched carefully since he changes his presentation often.
Firmly attached to the Vine Lady Wisdom is our lifelong companion and manager. We will be blessed by her because she can only be a blessing to us. Because she has excellent management skills, we are at peace to let her have control of every area of our lives. We see how she blesses our relationships, our finances, our health, our mental state, our physical wellbeing, our spiritual wellbeing. We delight in her skills to build up and rejoice that she never tears down. Lady Wisdom builds a lovely home and sets us up for long life and happiness.
Wisdom, you are a beautiful gift to have and enjoy. We invite and welcome you to manage our house which the Lord God has made his own temple. Thank you for your peace and all the gifts you bring with you. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
