Putting An End to Thirst
Key Verse to Read and Treasure:
Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. (John 4:14,)
For Insight
How often we have heard or read that the best way to quench our thirst is by drinking pure water. Pure water is the only liquid that satisfies our body’s need and addresses our dehydration effectively. We can drink coffee, teas, sodas, yet find ourselves thirsty again only moments later. Once we have consumed water our thirst disappears.
Saint Augustine, a theologian from the 4th and 5th century said, “Our heart is restless until it finds its home in you.” Augustine firmly believed that all human beings have a natural desire for God and can only find true happiness and peace in him. As the Living water, Jesus knows he is the only true fulfillment and satisfaction of our soul’s longing. The only One who can fill its emptiness. We can search the world through, flirt with other teachings, align ourselves with other philosophies, attach and entrust ourselves to other gods and all will fall short, all will disappoint us eventually. Like the sugary drinks we substitute we will need to return to the only source that can quench our thirst adequately.
When we abide in Jesus, we are like that tree Jeremiah wrote about when it is planted by the water whose leaves do not wither or dry up but stands firm and strong even in the heat of summer (life) (17:7-8). When we say “yes” to Jesus we have ended our search and allowed our heart and soul to find its true home in the ever-giving life source.
The Samaritan woman wasn’t the only one during her time who needed to drink from the refreshing well called Jesus. She wasn’t alone then and today. Many today need to drink from Jesus’. They are searching, trying lesser and inadequate solutions for their emptiness, spiritual thirst, and longings.
Her heart was searching, her soul was seeking and not until she met Jesus, did she find the answer to her inner longings. Jesus provides every spiritual need we can experience on earth. What the Lord has for us always leads to satisfaction and is a true spring of water welling up to eternal life and even life right now.
Jesus satisfy my thirst. Give me the water from your well so I’ll never thirst again. Amen
Ask Yourself
Am I satisfying my spiritual and soul thirst with the pure living water of Jesus or am I trying to draw from other sources and achieve the same outcome?
