Loved Unconditionally
Key Verse to Read and Treasure:
But you, my Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy; you are very patient and full of faithful love.—Psalm 86:15
For Insight
David had experienced the unconditional love of God at a time he needed God. God delivered David from enemies and David knew it was nothing except the steadfast love of God at work in his life. David could write about God’s love, sing about it, pray about it, and talk to others about it because for more times than he could count he had experienced it firsthand.
David knew, like we discover, we will make mistakes in life. We will mess up and need understanding from those closest to us. Thank goodness there are those willing to love us unconditionally. Those who give us grace and forgiveness. Those who overlook our flaws, love us despite our attitude, extend grace and forgiveness when we have failed or hurt them in some way.
When we think of God’s love being unconditional, we might relate it to an emotion. But God’s love is also action. God’s unwavering and steadfast love isn’t always easy to detect or understand. Sometimes God’s love shows itself in the small things we could easily overlook or miss. We might not see it as love, but God’s love can come to us through a neighbor’s concern for us. We have a neighbor who takes in our trash cans whenever she’s out walking. To some this might not be a loving act or a big thing, but Barb’s kindness is one of the ways God shows his unconditional love for us.
At other times Gods love might come to us when we are in a crisis. Haven’t we all had plenty of those in our lifetime? Times we can remember friends or neighbors, church members, even strangers coming to our rescue. Those we might end up calling our “angel from God.” Those who appeared at the very moment we needed an angel from God to help in our time of need.
God’s unconditional love is present and active as a constant reminder to us that he is always watching, always attending to our needs, always providing whatever we need. The unconditional and steadfast love of God covers us when we have made mistakes, but it also covers us when we need a helping hand. Unconditional love is not rigid, based upon conditions, but overflowing into our lives, always and forever at work.
Lord, what good news that your heart is brimming, overflowing with love for us. Because you love us unconditionally, we are never without love and never without your help ands assistance. Amen
