Day 45: February 14, 2023

God Wants to be the Love of Your Life

Key Verse to Read and Treasure

It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you ands chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations—Deuteronomy 7:7-9

For Insight

How many times have you heard or said Happy Valentine’s Day so far today? Do you have plans for today? Is there some special way you will observe today? It’s reported that spending will be down this year in comparison to years gone by. Perhaps people are figuring out it doesn’t take much to say to “I love you.” Or, with the high cost of living maybe some will not want to spend so much on flowers, chocolate, jewelry, or date night. Whether you have plans for today or it’s just another day on the calendar, God wants to share his love with you today and every day of your life and you can enjoy his love for no cost.

Sharing his love and to be loved by his creation is all God has ever wanted. He wanted to share his love with and be loved by the Israelites, though they often rejected his love. Moses writes it wasn’t because the Israelites were large in number that God set his affections on them or loved them. In fact, they were the smallest among the nations. But God wanted to show his love for them because he was determined to keep the oath he made to their forefathers. And he thought that by loving them they would love him right back.

Out of love, God did and continues to perform mighty acts for his beloved. He will rescue, deliver, heal, have compassion and be long-suffering towards us, not because we are deserving or a mighty band; we are really weak and undeserving. Not because we are so great; we are only great in our own eyes. But because God took an oath when he sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. That is the oath that supersedes and surpasses all other oaths.

The oath of God is not like the politically based or motivated group we have come to know today, where people have taken up sides politically. But God’s oath is a promise that dates all the way back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden when they lost their innocence and sinned against God, after succumbing to the influence by the serpent.

The oath God took is permanent, unmotivated by earthly politics or human hearts, and unmovable by human hand or legislation. God’s oath is permanently etched in the palm of Jesus’ hands, in Jesus’ side, and upon Jesus’ brow. We see the evidence of and are reminded of God’s oath to love us every time we look at the cross.

Valentines Day is one day in the year where love is bought and sold but the day after we can return to showing love as we always do. But God’s oath to love continues today, tomorrow, and always. God is determined to keep loving us in hopes that we will love him back will continue.

You don’t need a special day to show love to your creation, Lord but every day of every year your love pours out on us. We are blessed to be under the oath you made and have kept throughout the ages. May we finally return to you the love you give to us. Amen

How will you spend some special time with God today?
