God (Still) Performs Miracles
Key Verse to Read and Treasure
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand on and their left…So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared—Exodus 14:21-22,27 (ESV)
With all the sickness, crime, death, suffering, pain, hunger, disappointment, and war in the world it could be easy to forget that God is a miracle worker; that God (still) works miracles on behalf of his people.
It didn’t take very long for the Israelites to forget the miracles God had performed in Egypt that opened the door for their escape after years 430 years of suffering and bondage. Even as quickly as they had reached the shores of the Red Sea they had forgotten and began complaining against Moses and crying out to God. Filled with fear and panicking, their minds went blank. In that moment they not only forgot God’s power but turned against leader he had sent to them, accusing Moses of wanting their demise.
It would take a book in itself to write down the number of times in my own life God has performed miracles and a sequel to write how many times I have forgotten he still works miracles and has worked a miracle for me.
We would think that such a sight as seeing Pharaoh and his mighty army being drowned in the Red Sea would be enough to carry the people into the Promised Land. That they wouldn’t need God to perform any more miracles, but fueled by those they had already witnessed, they would continue their journey in confidence, assured God was on their side and would clear any path, barrier, or obstacle when they came to it. Their journey, like ours became a series of God performing miracles and the m forgetting what God alone can do.
What encouragement do you need today; what miracle do you need to remember God has done for you to (re)gain your confidence and know your struggle is defeated before it began because God is working and has worked a miracle to deliver you? What enemy do you feel defeated by? What circumstances do you feel powerless against? What is going on in your life that you need a reminder God is (still) a miracle worker?
It is a miracle God is as patient and understanding with us as he is. That he is not offended by our forgetfulness but simply remembers we are dust; frail human beings (Ps. 103:14) and considers this first. The amazing thing about God’s miracles is, they are not all behind us but in our future also.
Lord, thank you for the miracles you perform everywhere and in my own life. Thank you for displaying your great power and performing mighty acts that supply, heal and deliver us from the hand of the enemy. Amen
