Day 27: January 27, 2023

God Forgives Our Hidden Fault

Key Verse to Read and Treasure

Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the LORD,” and you forgave me! All my guilt is gone—Psalm 32:5

For Insight

It’s easy to commit sin and not be aware that it is sin. We may just think of it as a mistake we made or a failure or weakness on our part, or just a bad habit we need to discontinue. Sometimes God must get our attention in a different way in order for us to recognize our sin, as sin.

David had slept with Uriah’s wife Bathsheba, then arranged for Uriah to be killed once he discovered Bathsheba was pregnant with his child. David might have recognized he had a problem with his flesh and was weak when it came to women; having a spirit of lust, but he had not thought of what he had done as deliberate sin against God. Not until God sent the prophet Nathan to him, telling him about the rich man with many lambs and the poor man with only one ewe lamb were David’s eyes opened and he realized he had sinned against God with all he had done. He was broken and his guilt was mor than he could bear (Ps. 51).

Unless it’s taken away by God our guilt will not only weigh us down it can kill us. The guilt of sin is too much for us to live with. Eventually it will smother our joy, choke our peace, hide our light. We can’t last long when the oppressive weight of guilt settles upon our soul.

All it took for David to experience God’s forgiveness and be set free was to confess his sin and that’s all it takes for us. Until we see our mistake, weakness, blunder as sin and confess it to God we will be dead in that sin, broken beyond repair. God is the only one who can remove our guilt and save us from spiritual darkness and self-destruction.

Father God, we don’t always see our sin for what it is. Thank you for helping us face it, forgiving us and for taking away our guilt. Amen
