Do Everything You Can to Guard Your Peace!
Key Verse to Read and Treasure
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus—Philippians 4:7 (ESV)
For Insight
Have you ever thought of peace as the gatekeeper, the sentinel of your heart? That’s what Paul calls peace in Philippians 4:7.
If peace is the guardian of your heart, then what or who guards your peace? You do!
You guard the peace God gives and sends to you, which comes as you commune with him in worship, study of his Word, prayer, and as a biproduct of the Holy Spirit, dwelling within you. You guard it by relying upon and remembering the promises of God. You do it by drawing on the powerful self-control that comes from the Holy Spirit, each times situations arise that threaten to disturb, upend, and destabilize your God-given peace.
The devil has all kinds of wickedness and destruction he wants to work in your life but he needs access to your heart, which is guarded by the peace of God. In order for him to gain access to your heart he needs to remove or steal your peace.
No wonder the devil tries so hard to steal your peace, because that will leave your heart unguarded and unprotected. An unguarded heart is wide open to hatred, resentment, discontent, unforgiveness, anger, lusts, dissatisfaction, anxieties, worries, discouragement, disbelief, and doubt. The unguarded heart is an open vat for emotional, mental, and spiritual death.
The peace of God is one of the most valuable spiritual assets a believer has. It must be well guarded and treasured.
Lord, don’t let me give my peace away, relinquish my peace to anyone, or take my peace for granted. Just as peace guards my heart may I guard my peace. Amen
