Full of Grace and Truth

Key Verse to Read and Treasure

And we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth—John 1:14 (ESV)

For Insight

How many people do you know personally who are “full of grace and truth?”

In the movie Michael, John Travolta played the arch angel sent to earth on an assignment to change skeptics into believers and soften hard hearts. The movie was strictly for entertainment, not necessarily doctrinally or biblical correct, but it was enjoyable all the same. In the end God’s angel had changed lives and touched the hearts of many in ways that changed them forever.

In one scene a group of women were trying to figure out what drew them to this mysterious being. After a while someone said “It’s cookies. He smells like cookies.” If you have smelled cookies fresh out of the oven—warm and sweet—then its not hard to imagine why both women and men were drawn to Michael.

John said Jesus came full of grace and truth. If grace and truth have a smell it must be like freshly baked cookies. I can accept Jesus, the Word wrapped in flesh, descending from heaven, smelling like freshly baked cookies.

Who doesn’t need grace and truth, or, as John writes later grace upon grace? It is only by the grace of God we are saved, by the grace of God we are redeemed, restored, refreshed, and made whole. If grace and truth smell anything like cookies from heaven then that aroma must follow us from birth to death and usher us into heaven.

Jesus, even your enemies were drawn to you. Who is not drawn to grace and truth? To this day may we also find comfort and warmth whenever we are in your presence. Amen

Advent Mindfulness

Does his truth radiate and give off an aroma that comforts you? Bake a batch of your favorite Christmas cookies and have one while it’s still warm and sweet smelling.
