Everyone Weeps from Time to Time

Key Verse to Read and Treasure

A time to weep (Ecclesiastes 3:4, ESV)

For Insight

Jesus wept. He saw the brokenness, emptiness, and pain, of people and it touched him deeply. People were being exploited, misled, maligned, rejected, burdened, and it was painful to him. Instead of people being set free, liberated by those in authority in the Church, the religious leaders were adding to people’s spiritual and moral burdens by manipulating the Word of God in order to establish and remain in control. Jesus recognized what was going on and he saw people like lost sheep, so he wept.

What things do you see that make you weep? I’m a women’s counselor and many stories make me weep. I’m especially moved by those involving any form of abuse. In this country alone, 1 in 4 women (23.2%) and 1 in 7 men (13.9%) will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in her lifetime. The statistics are much more alarming for those experiencing verbal, emotional and psychological and sexual abuse over their lifetime. My own mother was a victim of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse so this always touches me deeply.

Jesus wept over abuses, poverty, sickness, brokenness, heart pain. He wept over the lostness of people. He wept because their pain was more than they could bear, and they still rejected their answer God had sent from heaven. Their healing and help were right there with them, but they were blind and couldn’t see.

In John 16 Jesus said, “I can tell you one thing for sure, in this life you will have trouble.” You will have sorrows, you will weep. To be born into a world where the broken break, the wounded wound, the hurting hurt, you are guaranteed to weep at some point and not surprisingly, at many points.

Jesus wept then, and he weeps today. Nothing hurts him more than when you and I hurt. Just like then, Jesus comes to be our help and answer. He knows we will have cause to weep in our lifetime, but he is the healing balm we need. He guarantees to wipe every tear and dry every eye.

Have you tried to hide your weeping from Jesus? Others? Do you believe Jesus can dry your tears and bring you the healing you need?

Praying Ecclesiastes 3:4

Dear Jesus, you wept. Sometimes in life we will have cause to weep. Sometimes we will weep for ourselves and sometimes we will weep for others. Thank you for understanding why we weep and for entering to wipe our tears and bring healing. Amen
