Where Did you Put It?
Key Verse to Read and Treasure
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you (Psalm 119:11, NIV)
For Insight
Some of us are so good at hiding something or putting something away that we forget where we put it! You don’t have to be exhibiting signs of Dementia or early onset of Alzheimer’s to experience this kind of forgetfulness.
Forgetfulness is not only a natural part of aging it is part of earthly life where we have so many things to keep up with. Just recently I was looking for the handles that go to our windows. Because they keep the window blinds from closing completely, we only use them when we want to open the windows, letting fresh air in. I looked everywhere when my husband reminded me, I had just taken them out, not more than two days prior, and told him I was putting them somewhere we would not forget where they were (since last summer we could not remember what we had done with them!) Yet, after putting them in the place I was sure we wouldn’t forget, I forgot!
The psalmist said he had hidden God’s Word in his heart so he would not sin against him. When God’s Word is hidden in our heart, tucked away in a safe place for safe keeping it will rise to the surface every time we need it. Just like I was able to lay my hands on those handles after praying for God to show me.
I also love how the ESV translates this verse as “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” That is what we are doing every time we read God’s Word, study God’s Word, and meditate on God’s Word. We are storing it up and it goes deep. Deeper than bones and marrow, infusing and weaving itself into the fiber of our being. It’s in our heart, but our mind also. When God’s word is sown deep it does not disappear; it is always a part of us.
THE “Word” of God is His Law, but it’s also His Gospel. Both can be applied to our lives, circumstances, relationships, and situations. Both bring us to the beautiful, bountiful life in Christ Jesus and accompany us on our journey home.
Praying Psalm 119:11
God, Your Word is not only sweet, but also food for the soul and guidance for our life. May we spend time in it so that it becomes stored up inside of us and we’ll never be running on empty. Amen
