The Power of Amen!

Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21, ESV)
For Insight
Have you noticed how many of Paul’s letters conclude with a doxology and “Amen?” of how many psalms end with a doxology which concludes with “Amen?” What a powerful little word the believer utters whether in worship with others or alone, individually, after prayers, conversation with God or reading His word. What we see as an ending or conclusion is in actuality a powerful beginning.
“Amen” is the believer’s way of affirming God’s greatness and faithfulness, His power to move and work in our lives and all around. A way of responding to God’s Word for our life; a response of faith. Only four letters in the English language yet powerful and packed. When we say our “Amens” we are telling God we are open to whatever He sees best for us based upon His plans, character, nature and Fatherly wisdom.
When Jesus asked for Baptism by John the Baptist, John was hesitant to do so. He did not feel worthy to baptize Jesus but that Jesus should have been the one baptizing him! Yet Jesus responded, “Let it be so for now because this is the way to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:15). When we conclude our prayer or time in service with other believers we are saying to God “Let it be so for me for this will be the way to fulfill all righteousness in my life.” What a powerful statement. A declaration of submission and agreement with the plans of God no matter what they are and what they bring.
Can you imagine how powerful “Amen” becomes in marriage, as a couple, as a family, church, business partners, during a time of suffering or adversity? At a time we are afflicted or in any painful situation? Praying, “Amen, Lord Jesus, Amen!” Just like the word “commencement” which means both ending and beginning “Amen” serves that purpose for us: ending or concluding and beginning, being opened to God in new and powerful ways. The power of Amen might make us think hard before we utter it either aloud or in our head or heart for by it, we open our lives, our heart, and our journey forward to the Lord’s discernment and wisdom.
Praying Hebrews 13:20-21
Great things You have done, O Lord in this world, all around and in our lives! We give You all praise and glory and lift You up. May we with full understanding respond with hearty and joyful “Amens” when we say our prayers, read Your Word and hear Your prophetic messages over our lives and circumstances for they become the door to new paths and beginnings as well as conclusions. Amen
