Avalanches, Tsunamis, and Everything in Between
Key Verse to Read and Treasure
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. (Psalm 46:1-3, ESV)
For Insight
If you have ever been in a flood, experienced an earthquake, been at sea or on the water when a storm arose then you know what it’s like to be in the midst or part of something bigger than you and could easily claim your life.
There is no better way to begin this song of praise: pointing to our Almighty, powerful, ever present, refuge, help in trouble; the One who is—without question—our strength and keeper of all things. The happenings and events of this world, and that includes the elements of nature we have no control over can be too much for us. We have gotten sophisticated enough in our technology to be able to track a storm, predict meteorological forces and fronts, warn people ahead of time that a tornado or hurricane may be on the move, but we have no ability to stop any of them; only do all we can to hunker down or try to get ahead of and out of its path. God, who created heaven and earth is the only One, the only force that can stop a storm in its path or keep devastation from happening when fierce winds kick up. Not even the most rogue wind or wave are too powerful for God. While an avalanche is eerily muffled and silent, incalculably massive and a tsunami is a scary wall of water, and destructive God is not out massed or overpowered.
Just like the meteorological storms that arise and become too powerful for us, God can keep us safe and be our refuge when the storms of this life kick in; when everything is shaking and rocking. There is no life-storm we experience that is any match for the power of God. Whatever name we give our storm: relational, financial, situational, physical, emotional, mental, we can let God be our refuge, our strength, our very present help in time of trouble. We can call on him, lean on him, trust in him, find our peace in him, he is our holy habitation, our fortress and can be our peace through it all.
Praying Psalm 46:1-3
Almighty God, you are truly our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear though all aspects of life seem to be falling apart or chaotic in every area. In the midst of deep trouble, we will trust in you, we will look to you, we will remember your greatness and that because you are with us, we can make it through.
Prayer Challenge
As you name or identify your storm also name the characteristics and promises of God.
