That Feeling of Accomplishment
Key Verse to Read and Treasure
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. (John 17:4, ESV)
For Insight
You’ve had that feeling at times, I’m sure. Completed something that challenged or tested your endurance. Gotten to the end, flooded with the satisfaction of having accomplished something very hard. Feeling accomplished can come after completing simple such as day-to-day tasks, and it can come after you’ve accomplished something big, something that started out feeling nearly impossible. I’ve had so many I’ve lost count. Accomplishing the little things in life. Nothing to write home about, post on social media or celebrate in a big way. Still, they mattered to me and at the time. And I can think of many times having that feeling and experience after accomplishing something that was no easy feat. Like the time I sewed our oldest daughter’s wedding gown, and when I mastered the pipe organ after training as a church musician, or getting something published, completing certifications in areas I had studied long and hard, and most recently figuring out how to get my husband’s email back on his computer after it was stripped off. Trust me, for me that was a huge accomplishment!
Jesus experienced accomplishments during his earthly ministry too. Some we read about and others, like John wrote at the end of his Gospel, were so numerous it would be impossible to put it all down; it would fill the earth. In today’s key verse we read how Jesus said glorifying the Father was an accomplishment. No little thing. And he continued to glorify the Father all the way to his last breath as he was breathing his last, saying “It is finished.” Meaning the law was complete, the task for which his heavenly Father sent him was accomplished. He had secured salvation for not just one group of people, but the entire world. We’ll never come anywhere close to that kind of accomplishment, but we will experience many and enough to bring a smile to our face and like Jesus we will and should know what it feels like to accomplish the Father’s will and plans for our life. When we do that we will be able to share in the joy of our Savior. God wants you to know that feeling of being accomplished. He wants you to know what it’s like to press through the hard stuff, to stick something out even though it’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done, to know what it’s like to feel accomplished as you completed some work he assigned especially to you, and to know that you were able to do it—whatever it is—by the power of the Holy Spirit with the blessing of God the Father and Christ your Savior.
Praying John 17:4
Father, we want to experience that kind of accomplishment: knowing we have completed some tasks that you have given us and glorified you as we did it. Bless us to know that feeling and specially to please you in that very special way. Amen
