Everything will Be Alright

When we hear the word or expression “alright” we might think of a certain actor or celebrity who is known for saying it three times in a row with exclamation points. As a part of speech or grammatically, the meaning of alright is “something being done or performed in a satisfactory way, certainty that things will have a good or satisfactory outcome.” Not hinting at something being performed or turning out in a way that is substandard but that it’s going to be okay, good. It takes confidence in something or someone to make a statement like that especially when, we can’t say for sure how things will turn out. Sometimes we will tell ourselves or others that because the circumstances are overwhelming, and we just need a lifeline of hope to grab hold of.
God wants us to have that kind of confidence in him. He does not ask us to have blind nor baseless faith, but faith based on how we have known him to be in the past, based upon what we’ve learned about him from reading our Bible, based upon his character, his love for us, his promises, and knowing he will never do anything harmful to us. When we say everything will be “alright” we are putting our trust in an Almighty, faithful, perfectly loving and Sovereign God. Believing in our heart of faith that because he rules heaven and earth there is no way things will turn out otherwise.
This is the message Paul was communicating in Romans 8:28, giving confidence to those who needed something hopeful to hang onto when things were not at their best or looking hopeful. Paul’s message has reached down through the ages because God has reached down through the ages to make sure we can have that same hope—not in ourselves or even in human working or wisdom—but in him. God has continued working on behalf of his own created beings assuring an outcome suitable for his plans for our lives. Because we know who God is and what he does we can say confidently to ourselves and those going through storms and fires, “everything will be alright” and mean is sincerely and confidently.

God, even the accidental, catastrophic, tragic events of life—which all leave us stunned and stripped of all hope so very often—even to these we can tell ourselves and others with confidence that everything will be alright because in your hands and through your power it will be. Fill us with this kind of assurance and help us to share it with others. Amen
