You are the Apple of God’s Eye

For he who touches you touches the apple of his eye. (Zachariah 2:8, ESV)
For Insight
Concerning this idiom, we are often familiar with it as David uses it in Psalm 17:8, where he prays to God, “Keep me as the apple of your eye.” But how assuring to read it through the prophet Zachariah where we understand how precious we are to the Lord God. Just as we are protective of the most vulnerable and sensitive places on the human body—the pupil of the eye being one of those places—God is that way towards us. We should never doubt that God hurts when we hurt. The devil loves to whisper how God does not care or make us wonder where God was when we were being hurt or maligned. No, when we are wounded or attacked or harmed in any way God is not unfeeling or dismissive. We never need wonder if those who strike out against us in any way will go unpunished. They will experience the ire and wrath of God just as God promised those who had plundered his people Israel.
As a parent and grandparent, I can say my children and now especially my grandchildren are the “apple of my eye.” It doesn’t mean I see them as a piece of fruit, it’s just a way of saying how dear and precious they are to me. I am protective of them and continually pray prayers of protection over and favor for them. I know if they are the apple of my eye, then how much more they are the apple of God’s eye.
We can be confident, even filled with joy today as we go forward, knowing how deeply God cares for us. we are not just anybody, we are the “apple of his eye.” The ones he loves and cares for, shelters as a mother hen shelters her babies under her wing.
Praying Zachariah 2:8
LORD God, you have made us and declared us as the “apple of your eye.” What a position to have, an honor to have bestowed upon us. We need not fret or wonder where we stand with you—and praise Jesus for his atoning sacrifice on our behalf that allows you to continue to look upon us in this way—may we daily remember who we are and to whom we belong. Even when the world or others see us as nothing, insignificant, or unimportant, we can know we are the apple of your eye. Amen
