When You are Afraid
Key Verse to Read and Treasure
When I am afraid I will put my trust in you (Psalm 56:3, NLT)
For Insight
Several things we know about fear:
Fear can literally consume us
Fear can separate us from God
Fear can rob us of peace, confidence, joy and even life itself
Fear can deliver us into the devil’s clutches
Fear can make us physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually ill
Fear can destroy our meaningful relationships
Fear can weaken our faith in God
Fear can make us vulnerable to temptation
We all react differently when we are afraid. Solomon dedicated many proverbs to the subject of fear and makes it clear the things that can happen when we give in to it. In the story of Adam and Eve we read how the first man and woman hid from God due to their new emotion of fear brought on by their sin of disobedience ( Read Genesis 3:10). They had never hid from God before, but now instead of running toward God, they ran from him.
Whether we are afraid because of people, upcoming activity, emotions, circumstances, suffering, sickness, the unknown, enemies, or even death, God wants us to come to him; not pull back or try to hide from him. He wants us to get in the habit of running to him when we are afraid, not away from him. When we run to him in our fear we will find our help, our comfort and our strength.
Praying Psalm 56:3
In fear, often our instinct is to run and hide; to run and hide from you. But regardless of what or who we are running from you want us to develop the habit of running to you, not away. Amen
