God Does Send Signs

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign (Isaiah 7:14, NIV)

The sign ahead of us read: “Road Closed. Detour Ahead.” That was good information because it gave us a chance to decide if we wanted to keep going or turn off beforehand. When we are driving signs are helpful. They let us know what’s ahead and if there is anything special or particular we need to watch for. Signs such as the one we saw or “Bridge Out,” “Road-Work, Flooding Zone”, help us make good decisions and make needed or wise adjustments. They alert us and are meant to help us get where we are going with the least amount of aggravation, trouble, and delays. They can steer us away from danger.

Isaiah said that God would give us a sign. God’s sign came through a series of events: The virgin would conceive and then give birth to a Son, and call the baby Immanuel, which means God with us. This would be a sign that God’s promise given back in Genesis 3:15 was being fulfilled in their presence, right under their nose.

We can miss signs if we are not watching, distracted, or looking in the wrong direction. Those who studied the scrolls and paying attention knew God was going to do something amazing. They knew, like we can know today, God’s Son, Jesus, their Messiah was and continues to be a sign of his love, redemption, faithfulness, and forgiveness; His commitment to a broken, lost, and sinful people, his promise fulfilled. Like the signs we see on our hi-ways and bi-ways which are posted to guide us, Jesus is the sign of God’s love and faithfulness to us. Let’s Pray

Sometimes we are looking for signs, God, sometimes we miss things that are important for us to know because we are not paying attention or looking I the wrong direction. Thank you for the signs you send that point to your Son Jesus, who is our Lord and Savior. Amen

Reflective Questions for Soul-Tending:

Since signs only help us when we heed what they say or instruct, how has God’s sign of his love and mercy through Jesus Christ impacted you on your journey?

How will you incorporate today’s message into your plan of soul-care?
