A Prayer About Overcoming Unbelief
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24, NIV)
Lord Jesus help me see how I am a lot like this father in so many ways. I count myself with those who believe in you. I believe in you with all my heart and soul. I am a follower, one of your sheep who knows your voice and I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I love and adore you with all my being. Yet, it is in my mind where unbelief sometimes finds a home. Where it takes root, influences and tests me.
My heart says “yes,” my soul says “yes,” but my mind does not always say “yes.” How often my mind is full of doubt, conflicted, torn between what I read and experience in life and what I hear or see otherwise. My mind counsel me to dismiss what you speak into my spirit, disregard what I have read in God’s Word, and entices me to find the logic or practicality, a more worldly acceptable way. My mind says you can’t and considers that some things are just too hard for anybody, including you. My mind is prone to despair, depression, and discouragement and tries to influence my heart of faith.
Lord, I do believe, help me my unbelief! Grant me the fullness of faith that encompasses heart and soul and mind. Grant that my belief will pulse through every fiber of my being, believing that nothing is impossible or too hard for you, believing that you do work miracles and perform wonders, believing that you assign and send your angels to guard me, believing that you have forgiven my sins and have prepared a place for me in heaven, believing that every promise recorded in the Bible finds its “Yes” in you, believing that you still touch, heal, protect, rescue and deliver.
I will not entertain unbelief in my mind Lord, and I pray, like the father in the Gospel of Mark, Lord I do believe help me overcome my unbelief! Amen
