Jesus, our Soul’s Refuge

Let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them. (Psalm 5:11, ESV)

The Tornadoes hit fast and hard. By the time the winds subsided and moved on the damage was massive. An entire community was destroyed, homes were nothing but rubble, trees that once stood tall lay like broken twigs on the ground. Everywhere the eye could see there was nothing but damage and destruction. I felt sadness for those who had lost everything to such a powerful force of wind. Such destruction was hard enough when the weather is warm, but to have all your belongings destroyed in the cold of winter, right before Christmas, in the middle of a pandemic was something else altogether. I wondered about the displaced and where they would find shelter and refuge.

How often life leaves us reeling. Suddenly we might go from having all we need to not having; from being in a place all our own to having no place to call home. When we are forced to leave our home or find a place to go, we become a refugee. That’s not a good feeling or position to be in and can be overwhelming without the help of others. Just as we can experience physical displacement and need refuge from life-storms, we can also be spiritual refugees.

Jesus promises to shelter and be that needed refuge for weary sojourners. Our soul has a home in Jesus. It does not have to wander aimlessly. We do not have to do life on our own without spiritual support or covering. Jesus will not only provide shelter and protection for our fragile, vulnerable soul he says when we take refuge in him we will experience protection, joy and be able to rejoice. Let’s Pray,

Jesus there is no guarantee we will not experience devastation or displacement during our life on earth. And as frightening as even the thought of that seems you can help us put life back together. Just like our physical bodies and possessions our soul needs a home also. Thank you for being our soul’s refuge and home. Amen
