Give Me a Clean Heart

Create in me a clean heart, O God. (Psalm 51:10, ESV)

David asked God to create in him a clean heart because David recognized he had a weakness for women. Not all women but attractive, good-looking, especially beautiful women. These are the ones that made his head turn and his heart beat harder. The Scriptures say when he saw Bathsheba bathing on her porch from his balcony he could not turn away from her beauty, sent for her, and we know the rest of the story from there. David’s pattern of lust led him into deep waters and got him in a lot of trouble. Because he lusted in his flesh, he did not always make wise choices and remain uncompromised in his position as king. By the time he prayed this prayer to God he had been spiritually broken and humbled. He knew the only way he would be able to break his pattern of lusting was to submit to God and ask God to change him inwardly.

David’s need was to have a pure heart; one that was free of the spirit of lust. But God can give us a new heart in any area, whatever our weakness or need is, whatever area the devil is able to control us or has established strongholds over us. We can ask God to create in us a giving heart, a compassionate heart, a loving heart, a patient heart, a joyful heart, a heart of integrity, a faithful and loyal heart, a nonjudgmental heart, a contented heart, and God will grant our request. He does not want us to be subjected to or controlled by our flesh or Satan any more than we want to be. Let’s Pray,

Dear God, we ask you to keep us out of the devil’s clutches, and out from under his control. Search our heart and know what kind of heart we need. Amen
