Meditation
The meditation of my heart shall be understanding. (Psalm 49:3, ESV)
Meditation is good for the inner being and for processing information presented. I had a conversation with a good friend who shared a piece of information that escaped me in the moment. But when I went back and reflected on the conversation later, I realized it was something very important that I should not have missed and that allowed me to follow up with her.
There’s a lot of benefit to meditating on something. Especially what we read in God’s Word. We might read a story or a parable or passage and initially we might not glean or comprehend all Jesus is saying through it; those little nuggets of wisdom, the words he has used to comfort or empower us, escape us. But later, after we start to think about it, process it, turn it over and over in our mind and heart, we begin to see things we didn’t see at first, points that can open us up or lead us to a deeper understanding.
The psalmists often wrote how they would meditate on God’s Word day and night. Like so many of them, even today, the person who meditates on the words of God is gifted with divine wisdom, prudence, and hidden truths. They are blessed to unearth all the hidden treasures that are buried beneath the top layer or initial read or hearing. In this way meditation is good for the soul, good for the spirit, good for the overall life and wellbeing. Let’s Pray,
Dear God, what joys come when we take time to meditate on your words, dig a little deeper and turn them over in our mind and heart. Amen
