God’s Mercies are New Each Day

Suggested Reading: Exodus 16:1-35

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning—Lamentations 3:22-23

The sin of hoarding is never far from us. It is a great temptation, and also a strategic tool of the devil that works for him most of the time. The first time we are introduced to the sin of hoarding—which is only greed and distrust of the Lord —is in Exodus when the Israelites were headed to the Promised Land, when God rained down manna from heaven for them to eat. This blessing of heavenly bread came with a caution. They were only to take as much as they needed for each household and God promised to provide manna each day. This worked well for most, but as human nature would have it some did not believe God’s promise for daily provision and started stockpiling, (another word for hoarding) which caused Moses to become angry with them for their disobedience.

Satan tempts us in this are inventing scenarios that are baseless and stem from thoughts such as “but I might not have enough…what if there isn’t enough for tomorrow…I might need this in the future, or, “but I want more…” These are the things we tell ourselves all the time and cause frugalness to become a slippery slope where we slide into hoarding. Satan tempts us but God tests us in this area—which is not the same as tempting—so we can see for ourselves if we are really as trusting as we say or think we are. God puts our saying, “If God said it, I believe it” to the test and exposes our true level of faith and fears.

The mercies of God cover everything we can think of and those things and areas we would never think of. God does not supply us with yesterday’s mercies because at the end of each day all his mercies have been used up. He has poured them over us, not sparingly but lavishly. When we close our eyes at the end of each day, we do not have to see tomorrow’s mercies; we can trust God will provide as he said he would and they will be waiting on us like the manna that greeted God’s children when they emerged from their tent.

As a son or daughter of the MOST HIGH God your every spiritual need is provided through God’s mercies. Each day he rains it down like manna from heaven. God’s love, faithfulness, forgiveness, companionship, guidance, healing, strength, peace all of these are poured over and into you each and every day. Be encouraged to bask in the mercies of God, thank him for his fresh, daily mercies, pray others will recognize his mercies in their life and pray that those who have rejected him will welcome the only true God who covers them with mercies.

Heavenly Father thank you for spoiling us with your mercies. You are ever-giving, loving, faithful and generous to us every day of our lives and journey. May we come to appreciate and love you more and more. Help us to recognize your mercies and be reassured by them. May those who do not know you or love you be inspired and warmed by your mercies and come to love you with their whole heart, soul, and being. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
