God Promises Never to Forsake you or Make you Depend upon the World for Provision

I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread. He is ever lending generously, and his children become a blessing—Psalm 37:25-26

What a comforting promise God covers us with. We read David’s words and think we have read them somewhere else and we have. We have seen this comforting promise in Deuteronomy 31:6-8, Hebrews 13:5 and at least 23 other times in our bible, and now we read it in David’s special way, where he is recalling the God he has known since his youth and now knows in old age. His God has been generous and ever-lending. David’s God—and our God—is exceptionally kind and very generous and in his care we can exhale.

When the world lends us something there is the expectation of repayment and with interest, and we had better make good on the promise to repay, else all will be forcefully taken from us. But when God lends to us generously, he does not expect repayment; we could never repay him for all his goodness to us even if we tried. But God is ever-lending, or lending generously with the expectation that we will pass it on to others. God wants us to keep the beautiful cycle of giving going not reaching back with a feeble attempt to repay him.

The children of God can worry momentarily, it is true. Sometimes they forget—but only temporarily—that God is generous and ever-lending. But God quickly refreshes his promise to provide and pour out a blessing, and worry is stopped in its tracks; it is lifted. Our Father does not leave us to the world’s discretion, shamelessly begging bread (sustenance) from the world’s table, begging for some small sliver of care, for some crumb of generosity or compassion, hoping they are in a generous mood and there are no hidden clauses in the contract we are forced to sign under stress and duress. We may live in the world, but we do not belong to the world. No, we are God’s possession, bought with the precious blood of his Son Jesus and God, who has claimed ownership of us and sealed us by a heavenly  covenant, is very protective of us and will take care of us.

The righteous have needs just like those of the world. Temporal, material, physical, relational, emotional, financial, spiritual needs, yet there is no need for us to go begging to the world to share from its closely guarded and tightly locked worldly storehouses. No need to get down on our knees begging or crying with hat in hand, hoping someone pities us, but the righteous can stand tall, shoulders back, confident of heart and filled with peace knowing God himself, who is ever-lending, the same God from our youth until old age, will provide for us. Heavenly Father we have been young and now we are older than when we first began this journey wit you. You have demonstrated your love for us, your protective nature toward us, your companionship with us through your generosity toward us. May we never be afraid and always be confident and encouraged our God will take excellent care of us. May we never be deceived by the appearance of things but always trust in your promise of provision and the timing of it. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
